Problem Set Unit 3 Topic 2: Nucleic Acids Problem 3.6 If compound B was added to the cell with compound A , DNA replication would cease and end at compound B. Since phophodiester bonds are created by condensation reaction, and if there is no –OH on the sugar then no dehydration reaction can occur. Problem 3.7 A. Since AT bonds only have two hydrogen bonds where as CG bonds have three therefore. A is relatively more rich in GC bonds than AT, therefore can withstand a higher temperature that regions B and C. Problem 3.8 Review Activities Unit 3 Topic 3 1) Natural form of chromatin is in chromosomes. Components are telomeres and centromeres. 2) Histones are protein complexes which aid in the packing of DNA. The most basic amino acids are on the outside of the histones to interact electrostatically with the DNA, and hydrophobic inside to interact with the different histones in the complex. 3) Nucleosome is a histone octamer – DNA complex where DNA wraps around the Histone octamer complex twice. With a linker DNA. Forces that stabilize it are Electrostatic and Hydrophobic interactions. 4) Gel electrophoresis and nuclease digestion of the DNA. 5) H1 role is to fold up the 11nm fiber into more condensed packing into 30nm interphase chromatin. 6) Type A fiber = 11nm fiber of chromatin packing, Type B fiber = 30 nm fiber of chromatin packing. 7)
