Concepts of Energy, Work, and Power 8/31/10 Energy -ability or capacity to do work Work-  move something(usually an object) against a force or resistance Lifting or carrying an object against the force of gravity Friction of parts of engine, etc in vehicles o Friction of tires on the road o Resistance of wind in air Manufacturing: Overcome natural strength of material in cutting, sewing,  drilling, etc Agriculture: Breaking up natural strength of soil (planting) Electricity: Overcome the electrical resistance of the wires (10% of energy is  lost in the electrical wires) Water: Pumped uphill-overcome friction in pipes
