13:47 Why steam engines are important? 1)First energy technology that did not rely on a force of nature 2)The energy source is not free CONSEQUENCES 1)Started a major effort in technical improvements 2)Started inquiry into how “good” the engine was 3)How much work we can do for a given amount of fuel 1)To extract work from any system, there has to be a P.E. difference 2)The absolute maximum work is limited by the amount of energy in the system  to begin with Change from high P.E to low P.E. is a  spontaneous change Change from low P.E. to high P.E. is  a no spontaneous change (there must be  work) Perpetual Motion Machines-Impossible to invent Example: Water runs down waterfall, machine is used to run water back up  waterfall and back to first waterfall, cycle continues  to move.
