Chemistry 124 Nirav Patel Section 2C5 Lab Partners: Aris Karabelas and Lavon Moody Fall 2009 October 13, 2009 EXPERIMENT 5: ANALYSIS OF COMMERCIAL BLEACH ABSTRACT: In this experiment, the amount of sodium hypochlorite in commercial bleach will be determined by reacting it with sodium thiosulfate while in the presence of iodide ions and starch. A solution of sodium thiosulfate of a known concentration will be added to the bleach using a buret in a titration. An average of of sodium thiosulfate was used in the titration, resulting in a calculation of 5.27% of sodium hypochlorite in the commercial bleach. Because the expected value was 6%, the percent error was calculated to be 11.67%.
