Text: Chapter 15: Section 6 – 7 Caption : A gas phase acid/base reaction. In the right beaker, solid ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) is produced by flowing ammonia gas (NH 3 , produced by a reaction in the left flask) over concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl). The NH 3 ( g ) + HCl( g ) NH 4 Cl( s ) reaction produces a white solid that appears as a fog over the beaker. In solution, the ammonium chloride dissociates to form the aqueous conjugate acid (NH 4 + ) and base (Cl - ).
