[SOUND] * during times of silent film they would have orchestras or just pianos play * also developed sound effects (westerns) and occasionally people were hired to speak the lines * 1979 Francis Ford Coppolla wanted to make "Apocalypse Now" * called in Walter Mursch -- asked him to take director's script and add sound to every line * initiated the design of sound [DESIGN OF SOUND] * 1st component of soundtrack is verbal; spoken words * dialogue * offscreen voice * offscreen voice -- addressed to audience * either eventually see character or is constant unknown voice throughout film *singing; music * source music and underscoring * source music - source of the music is in the frame (radio, tv) * scoring is music added that characters don't hear * can be original and preexisting * sound effects * in "San Francisco" you hear the sounds associated with social classes * silence * when a soundtrack goes dead, its a climactic moment
