Lecture 25 04/05/2010 10:31:00 Adolescents and Work Adolescents and part-time work o Trend in last 60 years in U.S. – high school students working part-time  o Who is working? – Upper/middle class, white students o How many students are working? ( 2/3- ¾ of seniors)  o Other industrialized countries – few students work Work and academic performance o In high school and college working more than 20 hrs/week is  associated with lower grades (for tenth graders, working more than 14  hours/week) Work and other behaviors: o In high school working more than 20 hr/wk is associated with  Disengagement from school Increased delinquency Increased smoking, drinking, and drug use (some studies have not found increased problem behavior for  working, poor, urban adolescents) Working and adolescent development-  o Assumptions: Work teaches job skills
