October 12, 2010 Bring #2 pencil to the exam (not mechanical) Hypnotism - very important and serious therapeutic tool - Power of suggestion - Mesmer was a fraud and a fake but appealing in instances where faith healing was possible - Placebo effect- your faith in modern medicine can heal you . . i.e. we feel we need a medicine to heal us - Many of our disorders are self remitting - Faith can be powerful i.e. healing power of Lourdes - Your hypnotizable if: o Absorption Capable of ignoring all peripheral stimuli o Disassociation occurs when your total stream of consciousness gets split off so a part of you is listening but a part of you is thinking about something else. i.e. doodling while on the phone o Suggestibility to what extent do you follow orders. (Multiple personality sufferers are highly suggestible) - Hypnosis leads to ….Anesthesia …sensory disorder (hallucinations) … disassociation (somewhat aware of what you’re doing. You wouldn’t do something you felt was morally wrong) ….Post hypnotic suggestions (amnesia suggestions)
