Beverly Anderson Mr. Kibbee Shakespeare: From Stage to Screen 30 August 2010 Richard III William Shakespeare’s work is timeless. His plays have been read, analyzed, deciphered, and even misinterpreted for hundreds of years. Nonetheless, his themes are as relevant today as they were when first examined by an unsuspecting patron. Shakespeare’s Richard III is no exception. Although this tale was written 419 years ago, it is viewed as a timeless masterpiece – a staple for any student of classic literature. Richard III has been preformed on multiple stages, using a vast range of interpretations. McKellen’s interpretation of this masterpiece is modern, yet consistent with Shakespeare’s original intent. Alternatively, Olivier’s version is more literal and strictly adheres to Shakespeare’s original text. At first glance, it may appear that Olivier’s version is a better representation of Shakespeare’s original work.
