1. Question: (TCO 1, 2) Identify and describe two causes of the Second World War. Then analyze significant ways in which World War II changed the world. Make sure you use enough details to support your answer. Your Answer: Two main causes of the Second World War was when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and The Treaty of Versailles. The culmination of these two events steered Germany into a path of war. When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany he immediately began secretly building up Germanys army and weapons. This build-up imposes a threat to other European nations not to mention the stronger Germany got the better the chance they could spread communism to the west. Additionally The Treaty of Versailles based on Woodrow Wilson's 14 points made Germany very unhappy. Some of these terms were, the War Guilt Clause, Disarmament and Territorial clauses. Many Germans thought the Treaty was too harsh thus tensions grew greater every day until the breaking point. World War II was an awesome period for technology and growth for the United States and the rest of the world. Simply put we probably wouldn't be where we are technologically if it weren't for WWII. One of the big ones nuclear weapons. This technology will forever change the planet earth, whether it is for power or destruction nuclear energy is one of the most powerful things ever created by man. Another major change which occurred in Europe after WWII was Winston Churchill called for a kind of United States of Europe to prevent any further war between countries of that continent. This resulted in the Treaty of Rome 1956, which was essentially a political union solely for the prevention of war. This later developed into the European Economic Union. Instructor Explanation: See Brower, Ch 3, 5, 6. Students should clearly describe such key events as the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, the rise of fascism in Europe and Asia, etc., as events that led to World War II. They should then analyze how World War II led to the collapse of colonial empires and the rise of the Cold War as significant
