CHAPTER 3 SENSATION and PERCEPTION Outline Experiencing Sensation How We See and hear -Vision -Hearing Experiencing Sensation What is the basic process of sensory experience? Some of the common examples of sensation are that we hear, we see things and we smell things. These are known as sensory experiences. We are surrounded by numerous types of stimuli. We receive these stimuli through various sense organs, send to the information about those stimuli to the brain, transforming them into neural energy . Once the brain receives the information in the form of neural impulse, via afferent nerves, we are able to hear, see or smell. The basic concept involved in this entire process of receiving information and be able to detect the presence of stimuli is the process of SENSATION. In Psychology this term is used differently as compared to its use in common language. It is a scientific Psychological terminology. -What is Sensation? It is defined as, “The process of receiving, translating and transmitting, raw sensory data from the External environment to the brain.” -This definition contains 3 components. 1. Reception 2.Sensory analysis 3. Coding Reception: There is numerous stimuli information, outside environment which constantly affect us, influence receptor cells of our sense organs . These outside information are received by our sensory receptors, which are connected to our sense organs. pressure Skin Touch In your textbook figure 3.1 provides the description of the sense organs, stimuli and the receptor cells in detail. (Page 80) These above mentioned organs have receptors, the special cells, which receive the information about the outside world. The brain does not understand about the outside world just because receptors received the information. So, once the information is received, it needs further processing to understand it. Bottom up processing Once the information is received by the receptors, it is transferred in a language that brain can understand. The stimulus information is converted into neural impulses, which are sent to the brain. For example: the receptors for the hearing sensation are in the ears. The receptors in the ears convert the sound waves into neural impulse. So, the information is processed through conversion of stimulation . This process of sending the information to the brain for further interpretation by the brain is known as bottom up processing. Top Down processing After the information is received and converted into neural impulses, the neurons carry those signals to the brain, and then the brain understands the existence of the stimulus, and which evokes the unique sensory experience. This understanding of the existence of the stimuli, and the meaning of the stimulus in the higher centers of the brain is called Top down processing. Perception
