My document was by senator Trudy Camping, against the ERA (equal rights amendment) in 1975. Events around this time were Walter Payton’s rookie season in the NFL, Tony Randall starring in the odd couple; convictions of Nixon’s top aids during the Watergate scandal, and Bill Clinton married Hillary Rodham. The ERA was first brought up to congress by the National Woman’s party in 1923. Critics of the amendment say that the Constitution already guarantees equal rights to women. They also claim the ERA would abolish the right of a wife to be supported by her husband. Supporters of the ERA argue that, despite the guarantees of the Constitution, women do not always receive equal treatment. They also claim that the amendment would not affect personal relationships within marriage. One of these critics was Trudy Camping. The constitution says, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the United States or by the state on account of sex.” Senator Camping believed that equal rights
