The problem has a long history in the OR/MS literature and there is a cute and humorous article written by Dantzig on the history of the problem (George B. Dantzig, "The Diet Problem." Interfaces 20:4 (July-August 1990) 43-47). Juniors in systems and industrial engineering have used this case and the feedback was good. This is usually the first team-based assignment in the class and comes during a block on "formulation." No solution methodology or output interpretation would have been covered by this time in the class. The case frustrates some students, so care should be taken to ensure that each team has sufficient leadership to keep the team moving. The case has been used as a 2 week assignment with 3 or 4 person teams. 60 hours of work should be sufficient (3 students at 20 hours each) for completion....
