9.12.2007 - Events leading up to war o Assassination Gavrillo Princip (Bosnian Serb Nationalist) Tries to throw a grenade at the Archdukes limosine, after a failed attempt, he shoots the Archdukes pregnant wife, then he shoots the Archduke in the neck. World War I begins shortly after Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Heir to throne of Austria-Hungary) o Triple Entente (Russia, Great Britain, and France) o Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) Anticipated that there may come a time when they’d have to fight a war with each other Italy had no intention of living up to their treaty with Germany and Austria-Hungary. It, in fact, had signed an agreement with France to stay neutral in the event of a war between France and Germany France knew something Germany didn’t know… France had invested heavily in railroads in the 20 th century. Developed plans to move their soldiers via train in an effort to get them places faster and more efficiently
