The Hydrogen Hypothesis This article lays out an explanation of how mitochondria evolved in eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria set eukaryotes and prokaryotes apart because it allows the cells to generate more energy therefore allowing it to have a larger size and not deal with the same respiration issues that large bacteria do. This partnering of two cells is extremely significant because it allowed two cells that each specialized in different things to combine to create a cell that specializes in both. The example given in the article is the combination of methanogens and α - proteobacterium. Methanogens use hydrogen gas and CO2 to create carbohydrates like glucose and produces methane as waste. The only issue is that pure hydrogen is hard to come by in an oxygen-dominated world, seeing as the combination of the two creates water. This is where α -proteobacterium comes in to play. They are able to live in an oxygenated environment and ferment food that they absorb to produce energy while
