The Statistical Approach : Whatever is close the behavior of the average person is considered normal Limitations: Normality = Conformity E.g., Is speaking 3 languages “abnormal?” A. The Valuative Approach : Behavior is abnormal if a person behaves in ways that are not valued Abnormal = violation of social rules and cultural norms Abnormal = relative to prevailing social/cultural standards Limitations: Causes psychological disorders; Serves those in power E.g., Drapetomania Inherently/subjective

Abnormal? A. The Practical Approach : No single definition is sufficient 1. Abnormality involves judgment; 2. Bizarre? Must consider context e.g., Watering lawn in the rain 1. Persistence over time 2. Social deviance: Radically violates expectations and norms e.g., Auditory/visual hallucinations 1. Subjective distress: Awareness of the pain our psychological difficulties are causing e.g., Inability to leave the house, form meaningful relationships, etc. 1. Psychological handicap: Impossible to be satisfied with life: e.g., behavioral handicapping—sabotaging success out of fear of success 2. Effect on functioning: Extent that behavior interferes with the ability to live a personally/socially acceptable life
