1 Human Impacts on the Environment: An Archaeological Perspective Review Sheet – Midterm Fall 2009 This review sheet is intended as a guide you through studying for the Midterm exam. All information covered in the course up to the exam (from lectures and readings) may be included on the exam. Possible Essay Questions: 1. How do populations grow or decline? What are some of the reasons why populations grow or decline? How do archaeologists reconstruct past population levels? What are some of the biases that influence these estimates? 2. If you found evidence of sharp decline in the frequency of tree pollen over time (e.g., from a sediment core extracted from a lake), how would you go about determining whether the decline was caused by humans clearing land for agriculture or other purposes, or by climatic change? 3. What is taphonomy? Explain how different kinds of taphonomic processes affect interpretations of human impacts on the environment. 4. What kinds of evidence or data do archaeologists and paleoecologists collect to inform them about past human activities as they relate to the environment? Think of examples of how human populations, social organizations, vegetation, animal populations, climate and landscapes have been reconstructed. 5.
