Midterm # 1 19:51 Infectious vs. Chronic Disease rates 1900-2000 Easy shit….infectious diseases has gone down since 1900, BUT chronic  diseases are at an all time high (graph on page 8 in book) Life Expectancy= means of measuring health status It is the average number of years remaining to a person at a particular age  and is based on set of age-specific death rates o Can be determined by race, sex, etc.  o Most common time is at birth, 65, and 75 yrs Years Potential Life Lost (YPLL) = measure of premature mortality calculated by subtracting person’s age at death from 75 years  ex: died at 30   YPLL = 45 Disability-Adjusted Life Years  (DAYLS)= measure of health that takes into  effect severity of health condition, age, and impact on future  Used because mortality doesn’t express burden of living with disability  To calculate: years of life lost (YLDs) + years lived with disability of known  severity and duration (YDL) = DAYLS Health Adjusted Life Expectance (HALE) = based on disability and life  expectancy rather than mortality (aka healthy life expectancy) In essence it is the number years of healthy life expected
