Born in 1743 in Albemarle county, Virginia Studied at the college of William and Mary and read law He contributed his pen more than his voice At age 33 he drafted the declaration of independence Minister in France in 1785 Resigned in 1793 when he was secretary of state in president Washington’s Cabinet Vice president in 1796 Third President of the United States Purchased Louisiana in 1803 Died on July,4, 1826 22

Jefferson and Western Expansion Thomas Jefferson was always interested in Western expansion from his early childhood. His father was a map maker, and land speculator on Virginia frontline. He had a life long commitment to supporting western exploitation and asserting American claims to western lands. Jefferson realized that the West was not an empty wilderness, but a land of crowded by confliction nations and claims of sovereignty. While President he acquired the Louisiana purchase in 1803.
