Hsien-Yu Shih Hist 236 Instructor: Pro Anna Pearman Module 4 Science, Medicine and Technology Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. Amongst his many achievements to science, medicine and technology include improvements to the telescope, improvements to the Cardano suspension and also contributions to the framework of modern physics and scientific experimental methods. Galileo made original contributions to the science of motion through an innovative combination of experiment and mathematics. More typical of science at the time were the qualitative studies of William Gilbert, on magnetism and electricity. In order to perform his experiments, Galileo had to set up standards of length and time, so that measurement made on different days and in different laboratories could be compared in a reproducible fashion which in turn had a huge influence on today's modern scientific experimental techniques.
