David Tsai Oxidation of Benzaldehyde 19 Oct 2009 Purpose: To explore the use of permanganate as an oxidizing agent in the oxidation of an aldehyde to an acid. Variables: Independent- Amount of benzaldehyde, potassium permanganate, and sodium hydroxide Dependent- Amount of benzoic acid Control- Room temperature Materials Large reaction vial Hot water setup Ice water setup Beral-type pipet Copper wire handle Small graduated cylinder Buchner funnel and filter flask Filter paper Test tube or 50-mL Erlenmeyer flask pH paper Benzaldehyde Potassium permanganate solution, 0.3 M Sodium hydroxide solution, 1M Hydrochloric acid solution, 1.0 M Sodium sulfite solution, 0.5 M Procedure: Add 300 mL of deionized water to a 400-mL beaker. Place the beaker into a hot water bath.

Place 0.2 mL of benzaldehyde in a large reaction vial using a pipet. Add 6.5 mL of 0.3 M potassium permanganate solution to the reaction vial. Add 4 drops of sodium hydroxide to the reaction vial. Seal and shake the vial. Attach a copper wire to serve as a handle. Use the copper wire to place the reaction vial to the hot water bath. After 20 minutes, remove the vial from the boiling water and place it on the counter to allow it to cool. Open the vial carefully. Test the reaction mixture for residual potassium permanganate by dipping a glass rod into the mixture and touching it to a piece of filter paper. Vacuum filter the reaction mixture using a buchner funnel. Wash the brown solid twice with 2 to 3 mL of warm water. The filtrate is sodium benzoate.
