David Tsai Vitamin C Titration Lab I 5 March 2010 Purpose: To investigate how much vitamin C will react with iodine. Variables: Independent- Amount of vitamin C Dependent- Color change Control- Starch Materials: Vitamin C Iodine Burette Flask Procedure: Measure and record 10 mL of vitamin C using a graduated cylinder. Pour it in a flask. Add 4-5 drops of starch into the flask. Record initial burette reading. Start the titration. End the titration when the first sign of permanent blue-black color appears. Repeat above process two more times for a total of three trials. Safety: Wear goggles. Data: Trials mL of Vitamin C solution Burette reading initial Burette reading final Iodine used 1 9.95 mL 0 mL 6.6 mL 6.6 mL 2 10.1 mL 6.6 mL 13.5 mL 6.9 mL 3 10.0 mL 13.5 mL 21.0 mL 7.5 mL

Data Calculations: 1. Average volume of vitamin C- 10.0 mL Average volume of Iodine- (6.6 + 6.9 + 7.5)/3 = 7 mL 2. 10 mL vitamin C/ 7 mL iodine = 1.43 mL vitamin C/ mL iodine 1.54 mL vitamin C/ mL iodine x 1 mg/ mL = 1.43 mg/ mL iodine
