Some useful things to know for Exam 1: Concepts from CH301 are used in but not examined directly, for example, naming compounds. Due to the differing level of coverage in CH301, there is some overlap with CH301 in this first exam. DON'T FORGET YOUR NON-PROGRAMMABLE CALCULATOR. .. Chapter 10: Equilibrium and Reaction Extent: Be able to use Δ G° = - RT ln K to find K. (You might have to use methods discussed in CH301 to find Δ G°). Know if K is = 1, the reaction IS at equilibrium, if K is bigger than 1 the system will reach equilibrium on the product side, and if it is if K is smaller than 1 the system will reach equilibrium on the reactant side. What is the sign of the value of Δ G° in each of these cases? (See the chapter 6 notes below: be able to compare Q and K to predict which overall way the reaction will now move. For example, K less than 1 and we set up the mix with almost all product, then the mixture would come to equilibrium by shifting its composition backwards toward more reactants.). Finally, be able to use vant'Hoff's equation to find any one of the following, given the others: T 1 , T 2 , Δ H°, K 1 , K 2 . To help, look at the book and see how K will increase or decrease, depending on if Δ H° was + or -. WATCH ALL SIGNS CAREFULLY, don’t ‘drop’ any!! Chapter 16:
