9/22/2008 1 1.1 & 1.2 Getting Started Definitions Statistics: the science of gathering, describing, and analyzing data Also: Statistics are the actual numerical descriptions of sample data Data: Information, especially prepared for a study Population: is a particular group of interest Parameter is a numerical description of a particular population characteristic. Sample is a subset of the population from which data is gathered Sample statistic, or statistic, is an actual numerical description of a particular sample characteristic. Population Vs Sample Population Sample Whole group Part of a group Group we want to know about Group the we do or can know about Characteristics are called parameters Characteristics are called statistics Parameters are generally unknown Statistics can be known Parameters are fixed Statistics will vary according to which sample is chosen Descriptive statistics Seeing the forest, instead of just the trees.
