Wine IQ: Wine Components- Color Boyer does not put a lot into color o It does not give you a lot of cues about the quality of the wine Color can tip us off o Certain colors indicate fuller bodied or tannic Or on the lighter side o Certain colors indicate of flaws All wine starts as grapes in the vineyard o Grapes come in a great variety o Vinis vinifer is the main grape Green, white, red, or purple o Table grapes are not wine grapes Wine grapes are smaller All juices in grapes are clear regardless of color o The color comes from the skin of the grape o To add color, you have to let the juice come into contact with the skin for an extended period of time This is up to the wine maker for how long We squeeze the juice out for sugar water that will ferment and turn into alcohol You can make a white wine out of ANY color grape! o Just don’t let the skin touch o Just a little bit of contact will make pink Boyer shows example of two Zinfandels One us pink: little contact
