Thuy Mai 10/10/10 Chem. 51LA Experiment #1: Identification of a White Solid The purpose of this experiment is to determine the identity of an unknown white solid by using other known solids. The identity of the product will be evaluated by using the melting point experiments to verify the unknown white solid. The melting point of the known white solids is useful in establishing its identity and its criterion of its purity. The unknown solid will be established by the resemblance of the melting points that is closest to the unknown. The melting range of a crystalline compound is determined by the strength of the intermolecular forces between molecules. The forces hold the molecules together in an orderly crystalline array and must be overcome for the molecules to enter the less orderly liquid phase. Large molecular surface area and high molecular symmetry are associated with greater molecular forces and high melting point. (Techniques 175) Results : Substance Melting Point #1 Melting Point #2
