Synthesize and purify zinc iodide by reacting elemental zinc and iodine. Employ relative mass to determine the empirical formula of zinc iodide. Evaluate the validity of the law of mass conservation . Investigate chemical reversibility by decomposing a compound back into its constituent element. Part 1 – Synthesis of Zinc Iodide Data Table#1: The mass of the large test tube#1 41.075 grams Mass of the zinc 2.002 grams Mass of the iodide 2.000 grams Mass of the test tube + mass of zinc 43.077 grams Mass of the test tube + mass of zinc + mass of iodide 45.072 grams Final mass of zinc 43.077-41.075 = 2.002 grams Final mass of iodide 45.072-43.077 = 1.995 grams Observation: After adding 10 ml of de-ionized water and 6 drops and acedic acid into the solution containing zinc and iodide, the following observations were observed: The initial color of the solution is orange yellow , and then turned brown Test tube is hot - the reaction is exergonic Steam
