Unformatted text preview: Experiment #9: Polymer Cross-linking and Viscosity By: Yueyue Shen I nstructor: Hasan Arslan Due Date: 11/12/09 Purpose: - Devise and perform a procedure capable of determining the effect of cross-linking on polymer solutions viscosity. Observation & procedure:- Heat the 50ml water and cool it down to 90 degree Celsius- Add small amount of PVA into the hot water and stir it until it dissolves- Measure the viscosity of the solution. It took the marble less than a second to reach the bottom.- 0.410g of borax was measured and combine it with 10ml of hot water.- add 0.1ml of borax was added to PVA Observation: goo began to form color of the goo --- faint yellow. Viscosity was tested --- it took the marble around 22sec to fall to the bottom.- add another 10ml of borax Observation: Thickened goo Viscosity was tested --- marble took 34 sec to fall to the ground- add the last 10ml of borax marble couldnt even pass through the goo- H2SO4 added --- around 15 drops .....
