Genetics Quiz Heredity (Inheritance) – Transmission of traits from one generation to the next Variation – Differences between members of the same species Genetics – The scientific study of heredity and hereditary variation Gametes – Reproductive cells that transmit genes from one generation to the next Locus – A gene’s specific location along a chromosome Asexual Reproduction – A single individual is the sole pare and passes copies of all its genes to its offspring Clone – A group of genetically identical individuals Sexual Reproduction – Two parents give rise to offspring that have unique combinations of genes inherited from the two parents Somatic Cell – Any cell other than those involved in gamete formation Karyotype – Images of the chromosomes arranged in pairs starting with the longest chromosome Homologous Chromosomes – The two chromosomes making up the pair in a karyotype with the same length, centromere position, and staining pattern Sex Chromosomes – X and Y chromosomes which determine an individual’s sex Autosomes – The not-sex chromosomes Diploid Cell – Cell having two chromosome sets (2n) Haploid Cell – Cell with one set of chromosomes (n) Fertilization
