ISE310 Fall 2010 Assignment 01 Due 08/31/10 Individual Assignment 1. Assume that you have just purchased a backpack at REI or a similar store that carries backpacks. Write two pages of your conception of all the various activities that were required to make that product available to you at that store. (2 points) 2. First of all, there has to be an manufacturer at the bottom, or beginning of the production of this  backpack. This company’s main job ought to be to produce fabric. So even before this, there has to be  a farm where they grow the trees to produce cotton, or maybe there have to be some people who trim  the sheep to get their fur and produce cotton. Another way of doing this, is to actually make it  synthetically. If these were made synthetically, and saying they are made out of some derivative of  plastic, the first thing would need to be to actually drill the oil. . Since all plastics and its derivatives  come from oil, we would need to drill this oil first.   So before this oil is drilled there has to be some studies on where the oil is located, how much it would  actually cost to develop the project, and other. However, that is another story.  Now, once the oil is drilled it is sent to the processing plants, where it is transformed into some sort of  polyurethane or plastic. Here, these new components are broken into smaller pieces and stretched to  be able to make the string, which will later be sewed up. This same process can occur for both cases, for when the backpacks are made out of cotton or when  they are made out of plastic, or both, in most of the cases. So once these strings are formed, they are  sewed together until the make a piece of cloth. Once this piece of cloth is formed, then they can cut it  and put it together with other parts of the backpack.  Once the backpack is all finished nicely and it has passed the quality control proof, then its ready to get  out of the manufacturing plant, and this is where the real fun begins.  First there has got to be a demand for the brand new product, and this is the final customer, such as  college student –us! So the retailer store sends a request to the manufacturer (exchange of  information) asking for a certain number of backpacks, because the new school year is coming up. So  let’s say that the REI retail store makes an order of twenty backpacks. The manufacturer receives this new order/invoice and begins the manufacture of the twenty
