Social Stratification in Caribbean Society See: The student should be able to describe the Stratification System in any one Caribbean society. With respect to  Trinidad and Tobago, this may include:   a. A historical overview of how the present society evolved (slavery, indentureship, colonialism) b. Some   familiarity with important contributions to the subject, e.g. - Lloyd Brathwaite - Lloyd Best - Susan Craig - Rhoda Reddock c. Describe the structure of Trinidad’s society.  Interaction among groups (ethnic) has changed as a result  of social, political and economic factors.   d. Educational expansion, accessibility and the role of education in social mobility. The role of various factors in determining social stratification, including: Social Class, Race and Ethnicity,  Gender, Religion.  CARIBBEAN SOCIETY The true indigenous inhabitants have been annihilated by colonizers.   Those who survived were gradually  deprived of their cultural identity. During 500 year period, from Columbus to the present, several groups have arrived  in the Caribbean, including  Africans, Europeans, East Indians, Chinese, Portuguese and Arabs. Africans People   were brought  from Africa  in large  quantity as  slaves.    Slavery  is  an example  of  a rigid  closed  Page 1 of 4
