Capitalistic Health Care Delivery System Success depends on: Payment by patients or third party. Physicians interested in earning large salaries. Competition between providers. Some knowledge of wellness/illness by patients so they come for care (burden is on patients). A philosophy that more money can be made treating illness than preventing illness.

Health Care Expenditures The cost of health care increases by 5-11% yearly. In 1929, health expenditures were 3% of the gross national profit. Today, health expenditures are 13%. In 1960 before the steep rise in health care costs, the average individual spent $150 on health care. Today, that is $4600. Predicted to double again by 2010.
