Sociology Theories In order to better explain people’s actions, sociologists use organizing theories. Most theories discuss and attempt to explain what is the driving force that makes social interaction happen. When we look at things from different angles or perspectives, we see different things.

Micro and MacroSociology Sociology is concerned with both immediate or local problems: microsociology And larger, national or world issues: macrosociology.

Auguste Comte (1798-1857) The Father of Sociology. Recognized as the originator of the term sociology. He believed it was possible to study society based on scientific evidence. Believed a stable social order rests on a consistent form of thought. Believed so strongly he could improve the world, he proposed a new plan to reorganize 19 th century France.

Described three stages of thinking: 1. Theological: supernatural beings or many gods. Creates warlike, tribal societies; militaristic philosophy 2. Metaphysical. One God and right/wrong rules. Rise of Catholicism. 3. Positive or scientific philosophy.
