Socialization Socialization is infusing the elements of a society’s culture into new members. Human children are born with less abilities than most animals. Socialization allows children: To “fit” into the social order or be a competent member. Learn to live within a group It’s how society reproduces itself in a new generation.

Responsibility of Heredity VS Environment Genes dictate certain characteristics: hair, eye, and skin color and gender. For other factors, genes establish a range of possible outcomes Whether those are realized is influenced by environment

Proceed in an orderly sequence. Different children pass through the predictable stages at different rates. All body systems do not develop at the same rate. Development is cephalocaudal. Proceeds from proximal to distal body parts Proceeds from gross to refined skills There is an optimal time for initiation of experiences or learning Neonatal reflexes must be lost before development can proceed A great deal of skill and behavior is learned by practice

Emotional Development Emotions depend on central nervous system maturation Newborns: pleasure and surprise and distress. 6-8 weeks: happiness (social smile) 3-4 months: anger 8-9 months: fear and sadness 18 months: shame 24 months: pride 3-4 years: guilt 5-6 years: envy
