MIND-BODY CONNECTION PNI = Psychoneuroimmunology seeks to understand the complex communications between/among the nervous system, the mind, immune system, and their implications for health. Also examine psychosocial factors (optimism & social support) moderate stress response. Compromised immune system = common cold, healing, cancer (T cells & B cells) all help identify and destroy all foreign substances PNI studies : traumatic stress can impair immunity for as long as a year Stress lead to increased susceptibility to cold Increased defense Stress hormones play a role in the progression of breast cancer in subjects more anxiety, higher stress, and less social support 2 stress responses = Fight-Flight response & withdrawing reaction [person pull back to conserve energy] Female Stress response = “ ; in response to stress, females engage in nurturing activities protect themselves & offspring (more social)
