10/22/2007 1 Petroleum and Alternate Fuels Chapter 7 Petroleum Petroleum (crude oil): naturally occurring liquid found in formation in the earth consisting of complex mixture of hydrocarbons (mostly alkanes) of various lengths. Lengths range from C 5 H 12 to C 18 H 38 anything shorter is considered natural gas or natural gas liquids. Long chain hydrocarbons are more viscous, but the longest are paraffin waxes.

Distillation of Petroleum Petroleum fractions: mixtures of components of petroleum with similar boiling points that are obtained through the distillation of petroleum. Volatility: the measure of the ease and speed of a substance to be transformed from a liquid to a vapor. Distillation can be done very crudely or very finely Petroleum fractions are primarily used as fuels for vehicles and for home heating oil

US imports about 3.9 billion barrels of oil a year. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Started in 1975 after the ail embargo of 1973-74 that crippled the country. Bryan Mound - located near Freeport, Texas. Has a capacity of 226 million barrels million barrels. Big Hill - located near Winnie, Texas. Has a capacity of 160 million barrels. West Hackberry - located near Lake Charles, Louisiana. Has a capacity of 219 million barrels.
