I. Executive Summary The other night I was watching the news and a story about the “No- Impact Man” had come on and had sparked my interest. At First I was thinking that there is no way that one man can’t have an impact on the planet earth. It was after listening to the story that I found out he had a website blog about everything he does. I got onto the web and started looking at all of the stuff he does from riding his bike around New York to Showering with a one-gallon-a-minute shower head while using baking soda for soap and shampoo. Before I had heard of this man I had heard of a project with DECA about how a company can become more environmentally friendly. While surfing through this website I really got interested in not only how one man can help the environment but how a business can. We chose the company Macy’s for many reasons. Blake, one of the group members currently works there. This is going to be very helpful for the knowledge of how everything is run within Macy’s. Second, Macy’s is a nationally known company. This means that everything they do is seen by the public eye. Third, because this is a business we would like to see become more environmentally friendly. As young adults in this world you hear a lot

about what is wrong with the world today, it is always very nice to hear what is going right. We have designed a green marketing campaign to help Macy’s become more environmentally friendly. To produce our campaign we researched Macy’s as a company and also environmental issues in general and among other businesses. We set goals based on our finding and created a marketing plan to achieve and present these goals. To understand the customer’s opinions of environmental issues in a retail environment we first conducted a survey of Macy’s customers then later we conducted a survey of the general public. From these surveys we concluded that customers are environmentally conscious while shopping in a retail environment and that it would also be a positive influence on the customer if the store took these initiatives and publicized them. After conducting our research and receiving the results from our surveys we developed reasonable goals and ideas for Macy’s to become more environmentally friendly Goal: To decrease the number of plastic bags used within Macy’s annually. Activity: Reusable shopping tote bags.

Goal: To increase recycling in Macy’s at the store level. Activity: Paper, aluminum and plastic recycling provided with free pickup. To achieve these goals we prepared a presentation for Macy’s and a marketing campaign to market our green ideas. We believe that if Macy’s increases their sustainability that their customers will continue shopping there with assurance and that there may also be new customers drawn to the idea of an “Eco-Friendly Retail Environment.” II. Introduction A. Description of Business Macy’s has been a big name in the retail department store for a long time. They first had their start in 1958 by a man named Rowland H. Macy.
