Sir Orfeo: 25/10/2010 10:33:00 Themes: Similar to the Odyssey – Orfeo’s relationship with stewards, the disguise. Difference: Orfeo’s stewards are very loyal – why? Respect/fear Vs love. Appreciation of the arts Vs the fear of brutality. Odyssey contained a love story, about Odysseus’ homecoming/revenge/ Odysseus claiming what is rightfully his. Love appears in the effect Heurodis’ kidnapping has on Orfeo – madness almost – we only know its there because of the way he reacts to it. Performance – his love of his harp. Fairy kingdom not subject to time – mortal rules don’t apply to them. K.R.R Gros Louis interprets Orfeo’s suffering as representing Christian penance and the return or Heurodis through the grace of God. Applies elements of Celtic folklore – supernatural world of fairies, to the classical myth Orpheus & Eurydice. Narrative with folk-lore images.
