Homer’s Odyssey 10/10/2010 13:59:00 1000BC – Bardic songs 1300BC – Trojan War – Oral tradition of relaying poetry. Narrative focuses on great leaders, Achilles, Odysseus etc. Verbal formulae – set phrases, stock scenes. Odysseus becomes his own bard. C8th: Greek culture gets an alphabet. Immergence of writing impacts Genesis – controlling facility. Raises the level of ingenuity. Ambitious narrative composition – read it with a sense of “the whole”. Integrated design on a larger scale. “Telemachus becomes like his father.” – Norman Roberts Telemachus’ success preempts Odysseus’ success. Narrative purpose – nosdos - is to get Odysseus home. Encounter his importance via the actions of others. Achilles and Agamemnon are comparative to Odysseus. The dead have interesting status in The Odyssey – they turn up when Odysseus succeeds at the end of the poem. Shift in values of warrior society.
