The Book of Genesis: Chapters 1-32 – King James Bible 13/10/2010 15:44:00 Israelites – Canaan – common ancestry – stories about ancestry, ceremonially recited. 1000BC – Canaan reorganized, more organized governmental system. Traditional stories developed into epic narratives – Abraham, Jacob… Elite Israelites exiled to Babilonia. Two Creation stories – Genesis 1 & 2 – Genesis 1 was influenced by Babilonian mythic narrative. Higher criticism: tries to track Genesis to different sources. Accepted by Christian churches in mid C20th – 1 st five books of the Bible are attributed to Moses. E = Elohim – God is less immediate. J = Yahweh – personal name ‘father’ – direct communication. Hebrew Scriptures were written in the 3 rd century BC – translated into koine Greek – the Christians thought they didn’t need the Hebrew Scriptures. Narrative:
