Mafutaga Ta’ase OCHEM 3031 October 4, 2010 Extraction of Methyl Violet 1. Prepare Beer-Lambert Law Plot and Determine Molar Absorptivity. Review instructions on spectrometer and set wavelength to 588 nm. 2. Obtain 10 mL samples of the four standard methyl violet solutions. Label samples and measure the absorbance of each solution at 588 nm. 3. Prepare Methyl-violet stock solution. a. Mix 20 mL of distilled water and 0.5 mL of ‘concentrated methyl violet solution’ together in 50 mL beaker. Label new solution ‘Soln A’ and save it. 4. Measure Methyl-Violet Concentration in Stock Solution a. Transfer 1.0 mL of ‘soln A’ to a volumetric flask. Fill flask with distilled water up to 10.00 mL. Cap volumetric flask and thoroughly mix contents. Label this ‘Soln A diluted’. Measure absorbance of your ‘Soln A diluted’ at 588 nm and record value. Use equation 2 to determine concentration. Finally, infer concentration of ‘Soln A’ before dilution. 5.
