October 01, 2010 Hypothesis: Touching crystals can protect you against bad energy. Prediction: If you enter X’s house and don’t touch crystals in a prescribed order, bad things will happen. Experiment: Go into X’s house, don’t touch crystals in the prescribed order, and see if bad things happen. Q1: What is the biggest problem with this experimental design? *No comparison group (also need to touch crystals in prescribed order) *Small sample size(single individual; no replication) *Inferring causation-bad things might be due to psychological state, not crystals. *Quantifying “bad things”-too subjective, not repeatable. What would be a good experimental design? Treatment group 1: Control: touch no crystals or wrong order Treatment group 2: Touch in “correct/hypothesized” order Conditions to control/randomize: Don’t tell participant which treatment control for psychological state ; Same place, same time controlling for events that could affect behavior What to measure:
