In a sample of 286 adults there is a realtionship between marital stutus and the extent to which religion is used to cope with stressful situations. Previously married peole tend to use religion more to cope with stress than never married or currently married people. While 50% of previously married people reported using religion to cope with stree only 43.5% of never married and 32.1% of currently marrie people reported using religion to cope with stress. However this relationship is not significant ( χ2 (229 = 3.784, p= .151) In a sample of 133 men and 153 women the relationship between using religion to cope with stress and marital status is different for men and women. For men a greater number of those who were previously married used religion to cope with stress compared to never married and currently married. While 71.4% of perviously married men used religion to cope with stress only 39.2% never married and 36.2% of currently married
