Kong Yin Wa Dr. Gail Stewart BIO- 111- 11 February 24 th , 2010 Osmosis Laboratory Report Introduction A. Background The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate osmosis. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively or differentially permeable membrane. Osmosis is the passive movement of water molecules down the concentration gradient. To study the movement of water passes through the membrane, we are going to use potato (Solanum Tuberosum) membrane and table salt. There are four different concentrations of salt solutions. The first beaker contains 0% salt solution; the second beaker contains 1% salt solution; the third beaker contains 2% salt solution; the fourth beaker contains 7% salt solution. B. Hypothesis Hypothesis # 1 (beaker 1): The solution is hypotonic. Water concentration in the potato plugs is lower than the water concentration of the solution. Water from the solution goes into the potato plugs by osmosis. We expect the weight of the potato pugs increase. Hypothesis # 2 (beaker 2): The solution is isotonic. Water concentration in the potato plugs is almost the same as or slightly lower than the water concentration of the salt solution. We expect there will be slight changes in the weight of the potato plugs. Hypothesis # 3 (beaker 3): The solution is hypertonic. Water concentration in the potato plugs is higher than the water concentration of the salt solution. Water from the potato plugs goes out to the salt solution by osmosis. We expect the weight of the potato plugs decrease.
