How will it effect us? o Practical reason - Chicano latinos are the largest ethnic minority in the US (culturally, economically) o Intellectual reason – we cannot know and understand the culture of US without understanding that US is composed of many ethnic groop experiences, (that of chicano pop) we must know of ethnic diversity of our nation We need an inclusive history for full comprehension Largest amount of chicano background are of Mexican background in US o Largely concentrated in texas, cali, Arizona, new mexico o Cuban Americans largely concentrated in Florida o Central Americans largely living in Cali and Socal o Latinos as a whole are pretty scattered across US Some facts o 30 percent of latino children below poverty line o foreign born people are more likely to live in poverty than citizens (18 percent to 12 percent) chicano latinos are a “people of color” in a US context chicano history = 2 parts, the indigenous + the Spanish conquest o important is how these two fused together over history taking a look at the Hispanic legacy in chicano culture upon being conquerd, the Aztecs had many religious omens 1521 – Spanish conquer the Americas o what to do with indigenous people?

Began indigenous policy of Spaniards – to integrate indigineous people into Spanish empire After 300 years of Spanish rules, mexico begins to see some changes o People begin to feel that ties with spain are not that close People begin to see themselves as mexicanos, not Spanish Tired of being looked down upon by those of Spanish descent Realized spain was taking a lot without giving much back o Beginning in 1810 the movement for independence starts to develop o 1810- Mexican independence begins with the declaration of indep. From father Miguel hidalgo called the “grito de Dolores” on September 16 sept 16 is officially Mexican independence day father hidalgo was a mestizo (mixed Spanish and Mexican) o 1821 – mexico achieves its independence war destroyed their economy, ravaged the landscape name “mexico” comes from original Aztec name “mexita” o theory: mexico mabe not ready for their own independence when it came, as they had depended on spain for so many matters many civil issues break out Mexican gov had to rule a HUGe amount of territory 1823 – mexico becomes the largest republic in the world at that time (had territory all the way up thru Oregon) mex had no history or experience of governing themselves no parliament or leaders or nothing o mexicos hard past and experiences have to do with their history of not governing themselves while under spain
