Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky and was named  after his father; his birth name was Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. but he later changed it  to Muhammad Ali after becoming a Muslim.  He was endowed with the title  “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated in 1999.  Although he is now retired,  his most famous feat was winning the World Heavyweight Boxing championship  three times in his career - this hadn’t been done in over a hundred years by any other
