Enzyme-Linked  Immunosorbent Assay  (ELISA)   A biochemical technique used mainly in immunology to  detect the presence of an antibody or an antigen in a  sample.   The ELISA has been used as a diagnostic tool in  medicine and plant pathology, as well as a quality control  check in various industries.
Image of page 4
An unknown amount of antigen is affixed to a surface,  and then a specific antibody is washed over the surface so  that it can bind to the antigen.   This antibody is linked to an enzyme, and in the final step  a substance is added that the enzyme can convert to some  detectable signal.   When light of the appropriate wavelength is shone upon  the sample, any antigen/antibody complexes will fluoresce  so that the amount of antigen in the sample can be  inferred through the magnitude of the fluorescence.

What students are saying

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
