Unformatted text preview: CBNS108 Discussion #4 RT-PCR and RNAi Darcie McClelland April 21, 2010 Gene Structure and RNA Processing RNA processing Different mRNA molecules are produced from the same transcript, depending on which RNA segments are treated as exons and which as introns. mRNA stability The life span of mRNA molecules in the cytoplasm-is an important factor in determining protein synthesis in a cell- is determined in part by sequences in the leader and trailer regions of the molecule (poly-A tail shortening, decapping, poly-A tail augmentation, specific endonuclease cleavage) c- is also regulated by small RNAs encoded in the genome in process called RNA silencing or RNA interference RNA mRNA (Messenger RNA) carries information specifying amino acid sequences of proteins DNA to ribosomes. tRNA (Transfer RNA) Plays catalytic (ribozyme) roles and structural roles in ribosomes. rRNA (Ribosomal RNA) plays structural and catalytic (ribozyme) roles in ribosomes.
