Shayna Russell 18710646 Geo130 June 1, 2010 Reader Response: Week #1 The global society and its leaders, contemporarily, have begun to uncover and fully understand the drastic effects of draining natural resources internationally. As drawn out by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment : Summary for Decision Makers, there are four basic postulates concerning the ecosystem, and in turn necessary natural resources. Firstly, we have reduced, on a grand scale, the quality and existence of much of the diversity of the global ecosystem. Secondly, these changes have produced a net negative gain in the economy and human well being – and continued in practice will persist and worsen the irreversible changes. Thirdly, these global changes stand in the way of achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Lastly, changes in policy, institution and practice can serve to enhance specific ecosystem services that reduce negative trade-off of consumption and provide positive synergies to reverse the damage and degradation of ecosystems.
