Shayna Russell 18710646 Param Dhillion 312 – March 4, 2009 A Dehydrogenation/ Hydrogenation Reaction Results and Discussion The purpose of this experiment is to witness and predict the hydrogenation/ dehydrogenation of carvone through TLC and pH. The initial dehydrogenation reaction involved 27mg 10% Pd/C and .14 mL of carvone. The carvone, fresh out of the bottle, smelt minty. Put in a reaction tube, the mixture was heated around 160 o C for four 15 minute intervals. During the reaction, the smell went from minty, to arregeno-ey, to almost sweet; no major visual changes occurred. TLC plates were spotted for each 15 minutes interval; upon fruition of the reaction, the product had a smaller R f than the starting material, polarity is increased. After being diluted with hexane, the solution was filtrated to remove the Pd/C. 1 mL of 2N (10%) NaOH is used to coagulate the organic layer from the aqueous, top and bottom layers, respectively.
